These are the words of the covenant which ADONAI ordered Moshe to make with
the people of Isra'el in the land of Mo'av which are left out of most sermons in
which this chapter of Deuteronomy is mentioned.
For those of you who are not Jewish, you may say, the curses are just for the
people of Israel. Adonai ordered Moshe to make these words part of
the covenant with the people of Israel. Fine, than the blessing are only
for them, too, right?
And now, here is what you may have missed hearing from the pulpit about
Deuteronomy 28. If this is too radical for you to read here, I
challenge you to read this chapter in your bible and to read it slow enough to
really pay attention to what you are reading.
He allows curses
- in abundance
- on people in the city
- on people in the countryside
- on grain basket and kneeding bowl
- on the fruit of the body
- on the young of cattle and flocks
- on the fruit of land
He allows people
- to be cursed when they come in and go out
- to be defeated
- to be objects of horror
- to grope around in the dark unable to find their way
- to be continually oppressed and robbed without anyone to save them
- to build houses that they won't live in
- to be oppressed and crushed
- to go crazy from what they have to see
- to carry much seed to the field but gather little in because locusts
will devour it
- to plant and dress vineyards but neither drink the wine nor gather the
grapes because locusts will eat them
- to have olive trees throughout their territories, but not to anoint
themselves with oil because the olives will fall off unripe
- to father sons and daughters, but they don't end up belonging to the
people because they go into captivity
- to eat their own sons and daughters
He allows
- curses, disasters and frustration in everything people set out to do
- plagues
- people's bodies to be food for birds and wild animals
- engaged men to have their fiancées marry other men
- men to plant vineyards that they won't eat fruit from
- a man's ox to be killed without them eating any of the meat
- men's donkeys to be taken away
- men's sheep to be given to their enemies
- son's and daughters to be handed over to other people
- other nations to eat the fruit of a person's land and labor
- locusts to devour seed
- bugs to inherit peoples trees and the produce of their land
- foreigners living among people to rise higher and higher while those
people sink lower and lower
- foreigners to lend to people and people not lend to foreigners
- foreigners to be the head and not the tail
- enemies to be sent against people and they have to serve them when they
are hungry, thirsty, poorly clothed and lacking everything
- people's enemies to put a yoke of iron on their neck until it destroys
them
- nations from far way to swoop down on people from the end of the earth
like a vulture, nations whose language they don't understand
- nations grim in appearance, whose people neither respect the old nor
pity the your to devour offspring of stock and produce of soil
- those nations to leave people without grain, wine, olive oil, and young
cattle and sheep
- people's high, fortified walls, in which they trusted, collapse
everywhere in the land that Adonai their God have them
- even the most gentle and sensitive men to be without pity for his
brother, wife or children and will not share the flesh of his children that
he is eatingbecause then he would have nothing left for himself
- the most sensitive women, so sensitive and delicate that they wouldn't
think of touching the sole of her feet to the ground, will
begrudge her own beloved husband, son, and daughter.
- Ladies to secretly eat the
afterbirth that comes out of them, because they are so desperately hungry.
- enemies to severely siege and distress towns
- people group members to be left few in number
- people's lives to hang in doubt before them
He strikes down people with
- wasting diseases, fever, inflammation, fiery heat, drought,
blasting winds and mildew
- boils tumors, skin lesions, and itching, all incurable
- insanity, blindness and confusion
- knees and legs with painful and incurable boils which
spread to the top of their heads
- extraordinary plagues and severe sicknesses that go on and on.
He
- turns rain into powder and dust from the sky
- brings people groups to other groups which they have not known
- moves people to be around other people where they will become a laughing
stock and and a proverb
- brings back all the diseases Egytians had and they cling to people
- brings on diseases not written in Deuteronomy
- takes joy in causing people to perish and be destroyed and to be plucked
off of the land they are entering in order to take possession of it.
- scatters people among other people where they will serve other gods,
made of wood and stone, which neither they or their ancestors have known
- scatters people among those nations, they find no repose, no rest for the sole of their
fee, rather God gives them anguish of heart, dimness of eyes and apathy of
spirit.
- people to be afraid night and day and have no assurance that they will
stay alive
- people to try to sell themselves as slaves to their enemies, but
no one will buy them
