The haphtarah or haphtarah (Hebrew: הפטרה‎; plural haftarot or haftorahs; "parting," "taking leave") is a text important to the modern observance of Judaism.

It consists of selections from the Hebrew Bible (Tanach), specifically from the books of Nevi'im ("The Prophets").

It is read publicly in the synagogue after the reading of the Torah on each Sabbath, as well as on Jewish festivals and fast days. The haftarah usually has a thematic link to the Torah reading that precedes it.

When the haphtarah is read in the synagogue it is sung with cantillation ("trop" in Yiddish, "trope" in English), and its related blessings are said before and after it.

The reading of the Haphtarah dates back to the Second Jewish Commonwealth, the time of King Antiochus, a 2nd century BC Syrian-Greek (during the era of the Greek empire), who forbade the Jews to read from the Torah, but did not extend this ban to the Prophets.

In response, the Rabbis of those days substituted the reading of a segment from the Prophets, commonly known as the Haphtarah.

They carefully chose specific sections of the Prophets which correspond to the sedra and intended through this to capture the lessons of the weekly Torah portion.

Although the Torah reading has been restored, the Haphtarah remains an integral part of Shabbat and Yom Tov experience.
